The Parent Advisory Council for School Leadership is a group of very committed parents. The council is a group of elected parents who work very closely with Bonaventure administration and staff in an attempt to support students and programs. The council is elected at the Annual General Meeting in early October of every school year. The council follows the constitution and by laws that were established in October 1998. Monthly meetings are held. In collaboration with the school, goals are established each year and the council works toward these goals throughout the year. The council is involved in projects such as Family Fun Nights, Speaker Evenings.
In October of each school year, all the parents and guardians of Bonaventure are invited to an Annual General meeting. Time is spent on reviewing the past year's activities, setting goals for the new school year, approving a budget and holding elections for the new council. Every year the priority of council is to encourage parent participation at council meetings.
The guidelines for the Advisory Council are outlined by Manitoba Education. We have established a constitution and set of bylaws that define our purpose. We have a committed right and responsibility to work closely with school administration to provide the best learning environment for our children.
As a council we look for ways to keep communication lines open with all parents through meetings, newsletters and special evenings meant for sharing information or to help parents network together.
An important part of being an effective parent council is to not work in isolation. We need the input of parents to let us know if we are representing them effectively. Through our involvement with the Manitoba Association of Parent Councils we are getting a provincial view of parent council issues with a more direct line to the Minister of Education.
