Who is the School Counsellor?
As a member of the school's student support team, the counsellor provides comprehensive programming which enhances the educational, career and personal/social development for students. Counselling responds to specific needs of the student addressing prevention, rather than just reacting to crisis situations. The counselling program can play a role in developing a postive self concept in students.
Students can see a counsellor for:
A loss |
A fear |
Dealing with disappointment |
A conflict |
A rejection |
A death |
Family concerns |
A school problem |
A behaviour problem |
A physical concern |
Coping with stress |
Relationships with friends and the opposite sex |
Making decisions |
Coping with peer pressure |
A success |
A new situation |
Any other concern or help they need. |
|
The counsellor meets with students individually and in groups, teaches classroom guidance topics, consults and assists parents and staff as needed, coordinates efforts with other specialists, and refers to community agencies.
Students can refer themselves for an appointment or can be referred by teachers and/or parents.
