+ Teacher instructed courses require regular attendance.

+ Courses consist of weekly tests and assignments that must be completed and submitted prior to exam dates.  
Each course will have varying guidelines and deadlines.

+ In addition to regular class time teachers are available to students for one-on-one assistance at times other than scheduled class time.

+ When students require teacher instructed and independent courses, the student should complete the teacher instructed course first.

+ The Lord Selkirk Learning Centre strongly recommends that students do not enroll for more than two courses in each term.

Course Descriptions

Grade 11 Consumer Math  (MACM30S)

This course provides an introductory unit that focuses on basic math skills such as using fractions decimals and percent.  These skills are then applied to every day topics such as income, investments, credit cards, measurement etc. Regular attendance and completing assignments at home is required.

Grade 12 Consumer Math (MACM40S)

This course requires that a student have an adequate level of basic math skills.  Students work through topics such as life insurance, mortgages and income tax. Trigonometry is also one of the topics in this course. Completing assignments and regular attendance is important.

Pre Cal Math Sr. 1 (PC10F)

This course is the foundation course for any student who is interested in taking the Pre Calculus math at the grades 10,11 and 12 levels.  The goal of this course is to introduce the foundations of algebra and trigonometry.  There are weekly assignments.  Regular attendance is required.

Grade 10/11 Pre Cal Math (PC20/30S)

This course is a continuation of Senior 1 Math with emphasis on algebra.  It is designed to prepare students for Senior 4 Pre Calculus Math.  There are weekly assignments that will require several hours of homework per week.  Regular attendance is required.

Grade 11 Comprehensive English (EN30SC)

Students will interact with materials to improve their comprehension and writing skills.
Students should expect to read at least one novel.  Students should expect to complete one assignment per week involving reading and/or writing or both.  Regular attendance is required.

Grade 12 Comprehensive English (EN40SC)

In the Comprehensive English course students will learn about language for different purposes.  Students will be exposed to creative and persuasive writing, and will be requires to complete a research project.  Students will be required to read a play and a novel and respond to these in a variety of ways.  Spelling, grammar and vocabulary development will be included as part of the course.  Students should be prepared to work several hours per week outside of classroom time.  Regular attendance and keeping up with assignments is encouraged.

Grade 12 Transactional English  (EN40ST)

In the transactional English course students will learn about themselves as learners.  Areas of study will include interviews, reports, advertising, memoirs, and writing editorials.  Students will be required to read a play and a novel and respond to them in a variety of ways.  Students should be prepared to work several hours per week out side of the classroom time.  Regular attendance and keeping up with assignments is encouraged.

Grade 12 Interdisciplinary Sciences (IN SC 40S)

This course covers some basic Physics and Chemistry.  Topics covered include sound, light, organic chemistry, and rocks and minerals to mention a few.  The course materials are supported by demonstrations, hands on activities and video material. Regular attendance, participation and completion of weekly assignments are required for this course.     

Grade 11 Physics (PH30S)

Facility with algebra is a mandatory prerequisite for this course.  Grade 10 math at pre-calculus level is preferred.  Topics covered include: Velocity and Acceleration, Vectors, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Projectile and Circular Motion, Momentum and Impulse, Work and Energy.  Each lesson will be a fast-paced overview of the main concepts.  Students should expect to spend several hours per week outside of class working on problems involving physics concepts, math, graphs and manipulation of formulas.  Evaluation will consist of:  hand in assignments, quizzes, mid-term exam and final exam.  For success in this course, regular attendance is encouraged.

Grade 12 Physics (PH40S)

Completion of grade 11 physics is a mandatory prerequisite for this course.  Completion of grade 10 pre-calculus math is also a preferred prerequisite.  Topics include:  Waves, Static Electricity, Fields and Forces, Basic Electric Circuits, Basic Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating current.  Each lesson will be a fast-paced overview of the main concepts.  Students should expect to spend several hours per week outside of class working on problems involving physics concepts, math, and manipulation of formulas.  Evaluation will consist of:  hand in assignments, quizzes, mid-term exam and final exam.

Biology 40S (BIO40S)

Grade 12 English is a recommended prerequisite for this course.  Topics include: DNA/RNA Protein Synthesis, Introduction to Human Genetics, Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, Variety in Animals, Variety in Plants, and Angiosperms. Evaluation will consist of:  hand in assignments, quizzes, mid-term exam and final exam.
