Notice to Parents
Mapleton School Before & After Program
The Selkirk Friendship Centre Daycare (SFC) will be opening a before and after school program at Mapleton School in the new school year. We are considering 20 childcare spaces. The morning period of care will be between 7:00 am and 8:30, when children will be released to Mapleton School Staff. The afternoon period will run from 3:30 – 5:30 in the evening. The Daycare will be located mainly in the music room, although we will have other areas available if needed. We appreciate the support we have received from the administration, the staff of Mapleton School and the Parent Advisory Council. We have a parent policy manual and other information available to parents when they enrol. Until then, here is some information about the program.
About The Staff
Two Early Childhood Educators will be at the school. At least one SFC staff member will have a certification level of E.C.E. II or III. All SFC staff are trained in first aid, C.P.R and possess Professional Development courses. Many of the SFC staff have experience working with school aged children and nearly all are parents of school aged children. Most of the people working for SFC Daycare have been employed there for five or more years. The Daycare staff is supported by the Selkirk Friendship Centre and its Board of Directors.
About the Centre
SFC is committed to offering quality childcare to families in our area. They have a substantial waiting list in the preschool program and understand the frustration of finding affordable and reliable childcare. SFC believes that children learn through play and working together in a nurturing and comfortable environment. They feel providing an opportunity for children to learn about their world is key to learning.
About the Before and After School Program at Mapleton School
As parents of school aged children ourselves, we understand the obstacles to obtaining childcare in these important years. We hope to offer parents in our community another option to finding childcare. We hope to offer activities to the children before and after school to make their day more enjoyable. We will be open before school from 7:00 am to 8:30 am and 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm any day that there is school. We will not be providing snacks, so parents will have to provide them for their children. Please follow the rules for children with allergies outlined by the school. We will follow the school’s calendar as well as their inclement weather policy.
About the cost
One period of care (morning or afternoon) will cost $5.85 per period and two periods (morning and afternoon) will cost $8.00. Although we hope to provide flexible childcare, we will consider consistent childcare spaces first. (Regular mornings or afternoons or both). Subsidy will be available to all parents who qualify. If you are interested in finding out if you are eligible for a subsidy you can go on the Manitoba Child Daycare Site at www.manitoba.ca/childcare.
We will be requesting that full fees for two weeks will need to be paid for in advance. Fees will be due every two weeks thereafter. This is because funding for the childcare spaces is not yet secure, so parent fees will be fundamental in the running of the program. Parents will be responsible for daycare fees whenever their child is scheduled to attend, even if the child is absent.
We hope this information is helpful. Although Mapleton School and the Parent Advisory Council have been extremely helpful in implementing this program, concerns and questions should be directed to
the Selkirk Friendship Centre Daycare.
