The last virtue for this year is Fairness. At our assembly we discussed three components to fairness.  Mr. Sokalski has been teaching fairnessas it applies to sports in his health classes.  The grade one and two classes shared their poem and posterson fairness.  Three grade fourstudents shared their posters on fairness in sports and two grade six groupsdid fairness raps for us.  We alsodiscussed fairness as it relates to our last virtue of not being a bully andwhat to do as a bystander.  Part offairness is recognizing unfair situations and speaking up to have themchanged.  When you see bullyinghappen you need to speak up and get it to change.  We also related this to unfair situations in the world andtied it into our Pennies for Peace program.  Once again when we are aware of unfair situations, whereverthey may be we need to speak up so they will change.  Our last penny drive will take place during the week of June15th to 19th. Please have ALL your pennies to the school by June 16th, sothey can be rolled.  We will behaving one last class competition with the rolled pennies.  Our goal is to raise $600.00 and we areat $503.00.

Virtues for April

Themonth of April was spent learning about types of bullying, ways to avoid beingbullied and what to do if you see bullying or are being bullied.  We learned there are four types ofbullying; physical, verbal, social and cyber.  At our assembly we presented three situations with bullying.  Mrs. Kosmac’s class made a video on thedifference between tattling and telling to get help.  Mrs. Wilsonand her class made a slide show and told a story about social bullying.  Mrs. Rohne and a grade four studentmade a podcast about cyber bullying. After watching the presentations students gave advice as to what astudent involved in those situations could do.  Our RESPECT rubber bracelets have arrived.  Each student who has been practicingrespect in all areas of our school will receive a bracelet at the end ofApril.  There is still anopportunity to receive the bracelets before the end of June.

Virtues for March
All students in the school have filled out a goal certificate indicating a goal towards respect within the school that they will work on from now until June. We continue to work on collecting pennies for the ‘Pennies for Peace’ program.  Each class participated in a penny line contest during Spirit Week to see which class collected the most pennies in March.  After Spring break we will be looking at how to confront and avoid bullying.  We identified the four types ofbullying at the March assembly, Physical bullying, Social bullying, Verbal bullying and Cyber bullying.

The virtue for January and February is Self-Discipline. This is a great virtue for the New Year as it encompasses self control with goal setting. We are looking at various situations at home and at school that require self discipline and having students give suggestions about how to improve in these areas. In February all students will write a goal for the rest of the term for an area that is difficult for them to be self-disciplined in at school. We are still collecting pennies for our Pennies for Peace program. This program will continue all year. Keep sending in those pennies.

What in the World is Self-Discipline?

Yes, yes, yes, today Mapleton School Elementary was having an assembly. The grade fours had no idea what it was about, but Mrs. Rohne knew. After recess they got on their shoes and rushed to the door. We were sooooooooooooooo excited. When all the grades and staff were there, the assembly began. After Mr. Dudar spoke Mrs. Rohne walked up in front of the whole school holding flash cards toward her. We all knew she was the Virtues program coordinator, but we didn’t know what the virtue was. When she started talking about selfdiscipline she flipped over the flash cards. She told us that every week we would get a self-discipline problem on the intercom at morning announcements. She also said that the grade fours got to read the problem. After the problem was read, you would write a solution to the problem on paper and put it in the library bucket. Then Mrs. Rohne picked one from each grade she liked best, and then at recess, you have to go to her classroom and pick a prize. One time she picked me! I got to choose from a paddleball or a big bouncy ball. I choose the bouncy ball. After your solution goes on the virtues bulletin board. So many kids get a good answer, so many more problems, so soon the bulletin board will be filled.

Thank you to all Mapleton families for your incredible support for our Christmas hampers. We provided five large boxes full of food and gifts for both our families. Our Pennies for Peace program is well under way with over one hundred dollars already counted from only three classes. All classes will be counting their pennies before Christmas and we will have a four month total in January. This program will continue all year so continue to collect and send in those pennies.

Today the paramedics came to Mapleton School with their ambulances, an RCMP car, and an army van. We heard the sirens blaring all the way down Calder Road. We saw their lights flashing as they drove in front of the school. We had to dress up warm to meet them, in our snowsuits, tuques, and mitts, because it was very cold outside! Beramedic came out to entertain us as we waited. Finally, we passed our shoebox gifts from one person to the next, like a big
long human chain, and a paramedic loaded them in the ambulance. When we passed by the back door of the ambulance, we saw stacks and stacks of boxes for Operation Christmas Child. These boxes will be sent to needy children all over the world to make Christmastime a little happier for them. Operation Christmas Child, you rock!
By Grade One
We saw the paramedics. We heard the sirens and we saw the “Bearamedic” and we saw an army man. Operation Christmas Rules! by Carlin.
The Grade Two class was able to spread a bit of Christmas cheer to another part of the world by participating in “Operation Christmas Child”. The class generously donated 14 boxes of goodies to ensure other children would have a present at Christmas. There was great excitement as the ambulance and armed forces vehicles arrived at the school with their sirens blaring! We all worked together on that cold day to help load the many boxes from the school into the ambulance.
The grade three's contributed 12 boxes to Operation Christmas Child. I am very proud of the grade three's for practicing the virtue of empathy.

We have wrapped up the September and October virtue of Respect. Twelve grade six girls are presently creating a podcast showcasing the practice of this virtue in many areas of the school. They will use this podcast to continue to educate Mapleton students about how to be respectful in our school. We have begun the November and December virtue on Empathy. We will be practicing this virtue within our school, community and world. The grade four class will be coordinating our local Hamper Drive in December. We will be making hampers for two small families and are requesting Mapleton families to donate dry food items and small gifts. We have been given 2 families; single mums with 5 boys, please check the note that will be coming home with the Gr. 4-6 students. You may begin donating food at any time. Our pick up date for the hampers is December 15th. Our world wide initiatives include the K – Gr. 3 Operation Christmas Child program. We viewed a video at our November assembly about this worth while project of collecting school supplies and small gifts for needy children around the world. Our year long world out reach program is called Pennies for Peace. All classes will be collecting pennies all year. The funds collected will be sent to the Pennies for Peace program that builds and operates schools in Afghanistan. Please help us to make all these programs a success and help teach our children the virtue of Empathy.

The first virtue this year was Respect. A team of grade six students taught the virtue as it pertains to six areas in our school, classroom, hallways, lunch time, bus lines, playground and washrooms. The students learned the school expectations for each school area. The grade six students also took pictures of the students when they saw them practicing it. We had a progress report assembly where we saw the pictures in a slide show. We revealed a survey of how the students were doing on practicing the virtue of Respect. The team of grade six students will now make a podcast showcasing Mapleton students practicing the virtue of Respect. The virtue for November and December is Empathy. There are three outreach projects planned for this virtue. The K – 3’s will be participating in Operation Christmas Child, the grade 4 – 6’s will be participating in our Hamper drive. The entire school will begin our Pennies for Peace drive to correspond with Remembrance Day as we collect pennies for building schools in Afghanistan. The penny drive will continue for the entire school year.
