Think of Us on the Bus image

The "Think of Us on the Bus" Campaign has been developed to help keep our students safe by addressing the problem of traffic passing school buses while their red lights and stop sign are activated. When we started looking into this, we realized traffic “Running our Reds” was an issue, but didn’t realize how often it really happens. Based on our surveys, it happens, on average, 36 times per day!
That is 36 times per day where a vehicle is passing a school bus and putting children in danger.

INFORM
We will be launching the campaign through TV, Radio, Newspaper, and other publications to inform the public of this significant issue and danger to our students. While these statistics are specific to our division, this problem is not and exists throughout North America.
EDUCATE
Hopefully we will have reached as many people as possible through the traditional media, social media, and other sources. And hopefully everybody realizes how big an issue this is and takes notice of their driving behaviors around school buses. For those who aren’t sure how to drive around school buses, we will do our best to educate them.
.
ENFORCE
All of our school buses will be outfitted with Red Light/Stop Arm cameras capable of identifying vehicles when they violate a school bus. The video will be submitted to the RCMP for further action. A ticket for violating a school bus results in a $673 fine and 2 demerits off your license. However, our goal is not to issue tickets for people running our reds, our goal is to get people to stop for school buses and students. The division does not receive any revenue from these tickets while incurring the cost for the camera systems. We sincerely hope that we never need to use the red light/stop arm cameras.
The ultimate goal of our campaign is to have drivers “Think of Us on the Bus” and keep our students safe.
