Homework
Home reading should occur every night for approximately 20 minutes. There is a sign up sheet in the student’s planner that should be filled in by the student and signed by the parent. Boston Pizza reward system will be in place. Your child will receive a certificate for a free personal pizza once the home reading sheet in filled. There will be math sheets to practice addition, subtraction and multiplication facts sent home Mondays. Please have your child do the sheet and bring it back to school by the end of the week. Your child should study for the spelling test held each Friday during the week. Only the words misspelled in the pre-test need to be studied. There may be the occasional Social Studies or Science project or test that requires some time at home. Detailed
information about what is expected will be included with a project outline. The only other homework will be unfinished work that was assigned during classtime. Unfinished homework will be done the next day during a recess time.
Planners
It is very important for you to read and sign your child’s planner everyday. It will be the main form of communication between your home and I. All homework assignments, things to be brought to school, special events and any discipline issues will be recorded in the planner.
Monthly Calendars
A class calendar will be sent home at the beginning of each month. It will include any special days during the month.
Scholastic Book Orders
Each month, except November and March, I will send home a scholastic book order form. You may order books, if you wish. The date to have the form and money back is on the order form and the monthly calendars.
Discipline Policy
The three main procedures of the school are to be adhered to in the grade four classroom. These procedures are Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. There are three more class procedures for our class. These are Be Kind, Listen when someone is Talking and Do Your Work. All these procedures are taught and reinforced through the health program and the school wide virtues program.
The procedures are encouraged through a positive discipline program. When students are following the rules they have the opportunity to earn individual tickets. Once they have accumulated 20 tickets they may exchange them for a small treasure box gift. There is also a class reward system. When all students are behaving appropriately at the same time they can earn up to 2 levels for the class. When the class has earned 20 levels they participate in a fun activity, such as extra recess, gym, a game or points towards a movie.
When students are not following the procedures, they are given a verbal warning, if the behaviour is repeated they will meet with me outside of class time to discuss it. A third time will result in a phone call or planner note home. If, after this they are still unable to follow the procedures, we follow the school and divisional discipline code. This code can be found in the Mapleton Student handbook and has a variety of consequences, depending on the infraction.
Home, school communication is vital to the well being of your child. Please feel free to write me a note in your child's planner at any time, or call me at the school from 8:15 - 8:50 or 3:30 to 4:00.
