Lord Selkirk School Division offers a wide variety of school-based pre-school and family literacy programs designed to positively impact early childhood development.  All programs are free and incorporate developmentally appropriate activities that help to ease the transition into the school setting, and positively impact the social/emotional and physical well-being, and academic achievement of students entering Kindergarten.


Kinderstart

Kinderstart is a pre-school program that provides in school experiences for parents and their children to enjoy during the months prior to Kindergarten entry.  It provides opportunities to meet some school staff and other children, and to make a positive transition from home to school.  Here, children will have the opportunity to become familiar with the Kindergarten environment and gain greater knowledge of the expectations of the learning experiences provided by the school.  Kinderstart is open to families who have children eligible to start school in the fall of a new school year.

Happy Tots

Happy Tots is a pre-school program that operates out of Happy Thought School.  It is an early literacy program offered to children ages six months to five years.  Parents and their children participate in songs, rhymes, stories, crafts, and playtime.

Rock and Read

Rock and Read introduces children to an amazing variety of books. Parents and children enjoy songs, rhymes, book sharing and stories together. Children play in fun centres and participate in art activities related to the themes explored in books and rhymes. In this program, parents foster a love of books and reading in their young children.  Parents create a book for their child to take home at the end of the program.

Rhyme and Reason introduces children to a variety of books and songs. Parents and children enjoy songs, rhymes, book sharing and stories together. Children play in fun centres and participate in art activities related to the themes explored in books and rhymes. In this program, guest presenters share their knowledge and expertise on a wide variety of topics of parent interest.

Wiggle, Giggle, Munch

Wiggle, giggle, munch is a pre-school program that provides parents and their children time to participate in active play, games, and songs.  Participants are also invited to share a healthy snack to fuel their active bodies.  All parents and caregivers and their 0-5 children are invited to attend.
