On behalf of the Lord Selkirk School Division and the Board of Trustees, we extend our sincere congratulations to Kate Binesigichidaakwe McDonald for her outstanding accomplishments.
Kate, a former LSSD staff member and much-loved librarian at Happy Thought School, has demonstrated extraordinary resilience and commitment throughout her educational journey. She began her studies at the University of Winnipeg right after high school, but life’s twists led her on a different path. Despite being just two credits shy of completing her Bachelor of Arts, Kate chose to focus on motherhood, reconnecting with her birth mother, and writing her first book, Carving My Name.
Although education took a temporary pause, these significant life changes played a pivotal role in shaping her future. Kate’s dedication to language revitalization ultimately led her back to the University of Winnipeg. Fueled by her strong connection to Anishinaabemowin and its preservation, she resumed her studies, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Languages and a Certificate in Teaching Indigenous Languages for Vitality. In recognition of her perseverance and dedication, Kate was also named the Fall 2024 Valedictorian.
Kate’s work at Happy Thought School was equally inspiring. As a librarian, she was deeply committed to fostering inclusion, not only by sharing Indigenous perspectives but also by building bridges with newcomers from Ukraine, Russia, Germany, and other countries. She often spoke about the special bonds these students formed, reflecting that “they found that they were more similar than different.” Kate’s efforts in the library and within the school community helped create a sense of belonging and unity, regardless of cultural background. Through her work, she built a community where diverse cultures could come together and thrive.
Kate’s commitment to the restoration of Anishinaabemowin is also noteworthy. Through her work with Wii Chiiwaakanak—where she began her language learning journey—and her leadership in founding the non-profit Gaagige Ganawendamaang Anishinaabemowin, she is creating opportunities for future generations to learn and preserve this vital language. Her research project, Gidinwewin Gimiininaanaanig Odaanikoobijiganaginaan, focuses on passing on Anishinaabe Gikendaasowin/Ways of Knowing to those who may not have the chance to learn directly from first-language speakers.
Kate’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of following one’s passion. As the first in her family to earn a university degree, she is not only achieving personal success but also paving the way for others to follow. Her work in language reclamation and her efforts to foster inclusivity are making a profound impact, one that will continue to benefit the future of Anishinaabemowin and its learners, as well as communities near and far.
We are immensely proud of Kate’s achievements and look forward to seeing her continue to make significant contributions to the revitalization of Anishinaabemowin.
Kate’s determination, dedication, and service to preserving language and culture, as well as her ability to build bridges within diverse communities, are truly inspiring. Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved recognition.
We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
