Nutrition Policy


Vision Statement

St. Andrews School promotes an active lifestyle and recognizes the importance of good nutrition.  We understand that children need to be taught the principles of healthy eating as part of the school program.    

St. Andrews School supports the promotion of nutritious food choices and is committed to the belief that food served or sold at our school should reinforce good nutrition as emphasized in the Moving Forward with School Nutrition Guidelines.     

Rationale

Research shows that proper nutrition is vital for healthy growth and development.  It is not surprising that a balanced diet makes children more settled and attentive.  Studies have proven a direct relationship between nutrition and a child’s physical and mental health and their readiness to learn. Healthy eating helps prevent problems such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, dental cavities, and osteoporosis.  

St. Andrews School’s Nutrition Policy was developed to:

  • foster healthy food choices in school;
  • provide students with an opportunity to practice what they learn in the classroom curriculum;
  • demonstrate that schools value students’ health;
  • contribute to the primary prevention of chronic diseases and development of lifelong healthy habits;
  • improve students’ concentration, academic performance, attendance, self-esteem, and behaviour.

Policy

We will continue to promote proper nutrition and active living through our nutrition education and physical education programming.  All decisions involving food and/or drink at our school will be made with careful considerations to Canada’s Food Guide and the Manitoba Physical Education/Health Education Curriculum. 

  • Students and staff members will be encouraged to bring food belonging to Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide for recess snacks and lunches. 
  • School and community groups will consider the Moving Forward with School Nutrition Guidelines when offering food and/or beverage choices for sale in the school (canteen, sporting events, hot lunches, etc.).
  • Less healthy foods (chips, candy, etc.) should not be given as a reward to students for good behavior and/or achievement. 
  • Fundraising will not rely on the sale of non-nutritious foods.
  • Classroom or school celebrations respect and support nutrition education and policies. Parents are encouraged to plan with the school in advance, before providing food for classroom celebrations and other school events. Positive messages about balance and moderation in classroom celebrations and other events are communicated.
  • Our school will continue to provide a safe and clean eating environment which includes appropriate supervision and adequate time to eat meals and snacks.
  • All staff members will recognize the importance of role modeling in promoting healthy eating within the classroom and school environment.
