French Immersion

Elementary

École Bonaventure is a French Immersion centre in the heart of Selkirk offering students in K-6 and their families a totally immersive environment for optimal french language acquisition.

Students work in collaboration with staff and peers and community members on meaningful and authentic tasks intentionally designed to increase their working vocabulary enabling them to communicate more effectively in both english and french.

To help support the academic focus, we nurture a strong cultural component and strive to help our students develop a sense of belonging to the greater french community locally and internationally.

Our goal is to support the development of proud, engaged, multilingual global citizens.

Students at École Bonaventure enjoy a multitude of extra curricular activities such as team sports, a makerspace, choir, and clubs such as cooking, knitting, sewing, and board games. These clubs provide the students with authentic opportunities to practice their language skills and gain confidence for life long learning.

Junior High

École Selkirk Junior High is a dual-track school that offers French Immersion to students in Grades 7, 8, and 9. Our program is a continuation of what students have learned at École Bonaventure, as well getting them ready for the programs offered at the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School.

The primary focus of instruction revolves around the four aspects of the French language which are writing, reading, listening, and speaking, with an emphasis on oral communication.

The goal of the French Immersion program is to foster learning to create proud and engaged global citizens who are plurilingual. Throughout their academic career at ÉSJH, students will be exposed to activities that will increase their appreciation of the French culture in Manitoba.

High School

The goal of the French Immersion program is to produce students that are functionally bilingual through French instruction and communication. The program at the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School includes four learning outcomes in the areas of oral comprehension, written comprehension, oral production proficiency, and written production proficiency. Students will begin to understand the many advantages of being bilingual in Canada and abroad.

The program's aim is to develop the capacity of the student to communicate, learn, and appreciate the culture of the francophone world.
