School Closings/Cancellations - Weather Related Information

EXTREME COLD DAYS EXTREME WEATHER DAYS
All staff report to work  All schools shall be closed to all students and staff. 
Bus Transportation cancelled but schools remain open.

Parents/Guardians may choose to keep their child(ren) home or transport them to school.
(Students will not be marked absent.)
All division sponsored and extra-curricular activities that day/evening shall be cancelled.

 

 

EXTREME COLD DAYS:

  • Bus Transportation Cancelled

In the event of extreme cold weather, bus transportation shall be cancelled at a temperature of -40°C or a combined temperature and wind chill of -45°C or greater as of 6:00 a.m. on The Weather Network (Selkirk). In the case of extreme cold where busses do not run and where staff are required to report to work, parents/guardians will have the option of transporting their child(ren) to school and picking them up at the end of the school day. In cases where parents/guardians choose to keep their child(ren) home on an extreme cold day, students will not be penalized for absenteeism.

Parents/guardians shall inform the school if their child(ren) will not be attending.

 

EXTREME WEATHER DAYS:

  • Schools Closed

In the event of extreme weather/environmental conditions, schools shall be closed, and staff shall not be expected to report to work.
If schools are closed, all division-sponsored activities including Continuing Education, Lord Selkirk Education Centre, Lord Selkirk Adult Learning Program, swim classes, and extra-curricular activities for that day/evening shall be cancelled.

CANCELLATION PROCEDURES:

1. The Manager of Transportation and the Superintendent will be in contact with each other between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. The Superintendent will make the final decision regarding cancelling buses/classes by 6:45 a.m.
2. The Division Office will activate the automated phone messaging system. The phone messaging system will contact all staff and student households.
3. Announcements shall be made on radio stations and posted on the division website

 

ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY:

In the event of adverse weather conditions arising during the school day, if it is determined that the conditions are making it unsafe to operate bus transportation, parents/guardians shall be notified as soon as possible. School shall remain open, and parents/guardians shall make arrangements to pick up their child(ren) by the end of the regular school day.
