Literacy

Literacy is at the core of all that we do in LSSD and our approach is guided by Manitoba curriculum outcomes.   We believe that strong literacy skills will open doors for future and lifelong learning.  Our goal is to ensure that every student becomes a confident reader, writer, listener and communicator who can think critically and express their ideas effectively.  We recognize that literacy development is a shared responsibility and our staff work collaboratively with families, support staff and community partners to create rich literacy environments both in and beyond the classroom.

Teachers use a comprehensive literacy framework, recognizing that there is no one size fits all approach to teaching students to read and write.  Providing students with effective daily classroom instruction, rich learning experiences, access to diverse texts, multiple access points and targeted interventions all help students reach their full potential.

Through continuous assessment and ongoing professional learning, we strive to build a culture where every student sees themselves as a capable and engaged reader and writer.
